Day 1
An early start – we need to be ready at 06.30 to catch the 07.40 Shatabdi Express from New Delhi – this arrives at Kalka at 12.00, where we transfer into the narrow-gauge express for the five hour climb to the traditional British summer capital of Shimla. The Kalka-Shimla line has impressed all who have seen it with its professionalism, and the way it climbs to and fro across the face of the hillside to gain height. There are over 100 tunnels on the line. We arrive at 17.20, and transfer to the Oberoi Clarke’s Hotel with its breathtaking views across the city and surrounding mountains. This involves a short but steep walk, as the hotel is in a pedestrian precinct.

Day 2
A free day in Shimla. There’s plenty to do: take in the mountain views and promenade on The Mall like generations of British residents in years gone by, or visit the Botanical Gardens at the Viceregal Lodge. Don’t miss the very British Christ Church right at the top of the town and the recently-restored Gaiety Theatre – you may even be lucky enough to catch the current production!

Day 3
We’re taken to the station for the 10.30 train back down to Kalka, due in at 16.05. The return Shatabdi train then leaves Kalka at 17.45, arriving back in New Delhi at 21.55 from where you are transferred to your hotel.

Day 4
In the morning we drive to New Delhi airport to check in for our 13.40 Jet Airways flight to London’s Heathrow Airport, due in at 17.40.
