An extract from Helen Hazon's travel journal in India. Helen has a keen interest in all things textile related. She is a lifelong stitcher, currently enjoying quilting and embroidery but always keen to learn new skills. During the last fifteen years Helen has travelled extensively around the world and has visited many areas of India - twelve visits in total mostly under Amit’s expert guidance.

I have just returned from another wonderful tour organised by Amit and his team. This time we spent two days in Kolkata then travelled on to Assam for the remainder of the two week tour. Amit had packed an amazing range of activities into our time in this beautiful area – really something for everyone. The main focus was, of course, the textile heritage of Assam but there were also the productive tea gardens and the beautiful Kaziranga National Park to be visited and enjoyed. All of these activities were balanced by having some free time built into the itinerary so that we could relax and recharge – walking, swimming, stitching – whatever we chose.

We visited several places where the local people make their living using traditional methods of textile production - spinning and weaving silk to make beautiful fabrics. In one small town we were shown round a college where young people are taught these methods and are also trained in the skills needed to run their own successful businesses in textile design and production.

Assam is justly famous for its tea and we had several opportunities to visit tea gardens (plantations) and learn about the whole production process from leaf to drink. Our hotel for several nights was situated within one of the tea gardens inside the National Park. We had wonderful facilities and were able to spend relaxing times in our beautiful surroundings while enjoying stitching workshops prepared specially for us by Pat Archibald.

All of us in the group appreciated the time we spent deeper in the Kaziranga Park watching the wildlife. We had two visits – one an early morning ride on elephants to see the animals as the sun rose over the grassland, the other an afternoon jeep ride going further into the park to see even more of the animals and birds that clearly thrive there.

What a splendid tour this was! So many wonderful memories. Extra special highlights for me personally were the two opportunities we had to make roadside stops to meet working elephants on their way home after their day at work in the forest. A real treat to be able to be so close to these splendid animals. The whole tour was just wonderful!

Originally opened in 1903, the railway was built to connect Kalka with the hill station of Shimla, then the summer capital of British India. Most countries standardised their railway systems early on. One track gauge, one network, fewer complications. India took a different approach, largely out of necessity rather than design.

Today, the country still has three railway gauges, broad, metre and narrow. While broad gauge now dominates, the others haven’t entirely disappeared. Together, they reflect how the railway developed across very different regions, budgets and terrain.

For anyone interested in rail travel in India or planning a rail holiday, these differences are more than technical detail. They shape the journeys themselves.

The three gauges, simply explained

A railway gauge is the distance between the rails. In India:

Broad gauge (1,676 mm) is now the standard across most of the network
Metre gauge (1,000 mm) was widely used for regional routes, now largely being converted
Narrow gauge (typically 762 mm or 610 mm) was built where terrain made larger lines impractical

Each type influenced how lines were built, how trains operate, and where railways could realistically go.

Broad gauge forms the backbone of Indian Railways today. It was selected for major routes during the 19th century because it offered better stability and could support heavier trains over long distances. This made it well suited to linking major cities, ports and commercial centres.

Metre gauge, a cost-driven solution

At one stage, metre gauge covered large areas of India. However, the downside was always the break of gauge, passengers and goods often had to change trains where lines met. To address this, Indian Railways has spent decades converting metre gauge routes to broad gauge. What remains today is limited, but it represents an important stage in the network’s development.

Narrow gauge lines were often built where geography left few other options. In hill regions, particularly in the foothills of the Himalayas, engineers needed railways that could handle tight curves and steep gradients. Narrow gauge made that possible without the need for major earthworks.

Lines such as the Kalka to Shimla railway and the Kangra Valley Railway are well-known examples. Journeys are slower, but the routes reach areas that would otherwise have been difficult to connect.

Why didn’t India standardise from the start?

There are railway journeys that get you from A to B, and then there are railway journeys that feel like stepping into another era entirely. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, climbing from the plains of Tamil Nadu into the cool hill station of Ooty, very much belongs in the second category.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage railway, this remarkable line winds through jungle, tea plantations and mist-covered mountains, offering one of the most atmospheric train journeys anywhere in India. It is also one of the highlights of our South India rail tour, where travellers experience a side of India that feels very different from the busy northern cities.

A Railway Built for the Mountains

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was completed in 1908, during the final decades of British India. Its purpose was simple: to connect the hot plains with the refreshing hill station of Udhagamandalam, better known as Ooty.

Building a railway here was anything but simple. The Nilgiri Hills, often called the Blue Mountains, rise steeply from the plains, with gradients far too severe for a conventional railway. The solution was an ingenious rack-and-pinion system, still used today on the steepest sections of the route between Mettupalayam and Coonoor.

Here, a toothed rail runs between the tracks, allowing the locomotive to literally grip the mountain as it climbs. It is a rare system in India and one of the reasons the railway earned its UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the Mountain Railways of India.

What makes this line significant is not just the scenery. It is the fact that it survives as a working remnant of the Denver & Rio Grande system, built in 1882 to serve the silver mines of the San Juan Mountains. The line was never intended as a tourist attraction. It was an economic lifeline.

That sense of purpose still defines the experience today.

Built for Ore, Not Observation

When construction reached Silverton in 1882, the town was in the midst of a mining boom. The narrow gauge alignment followed the Animas River because it had to. There was no easy way through this terrain. Engineers threaded the track along canyon walls, blasted ledges from rock and constructed timber trestles to maintain a workable gradient.

Unlike the Cumbres route, this line does not climb to a 10,000-foot summit. Instead, it follows the river valley for most of its 45-mile journey, gradually gaining height until it reaches Silverton at 9,305 feet above sea level. The defining feature is the section known as the High Line. Here, the track clings to a narrow shelf cut into sheer rock faces, with the Animas River hundreds of feet below. There are no guardrails and no visual barriers. From the rear gondola, you look straight down into the canyon.

This alignment exists because it was the only practical route for freight trains carrying ore concentrates, timber and supplies. It remains in use today for the same reason it was built: it works.

The Locomotives and the Work

The Durango & Silverton operates coal-fired steam locomotives originally built for the Denver & Rio Grande Western in the early twentieth century. These are K-28 and K-36 class engines, designed specifically for narrow gauge mountain service.

There are heritage railways, and then there is the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.

Running 64 miles between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico, this is not a reconstructed branch line or a shortened museum operation. It is the longest remaining section of the original Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge network, a system built in the late nineteenth century to penetrate the mining districts of the Rocky Mountains.

When you board here, you are travelling over an alignment first opened in 1880.

Built for the Mountains

The Denver & Rio Grande chose a three-foot narrow gauge deliberately. It was cheaper to construct, more adaptable in tight mountain terrain and capable of handling sharper curves than standard gauge track. That decision allowed the railroad to climb deep into the San Juan Mountains, but it also meant steep gradients and demanding operation.

The climb from Antonito begins quickly. The route leaves the broad San Luis Valley and starts its steady ascent toward Cumbres Pass. Much of the grade is 4 percent, or 1 in 25, sustained for miles at a time.

That is serious mountain railroading by any standard.

San Juan Mountains Golden Aspens

The locomotives working this line today are not decorative replicas. They are original narrow gauge engines built in the 1920s, maintained to handle real mountain work. When the train digs in on the climb, you hear the exhaust sharpen and feel the rhythm change. It is practical steam, not theatrical steam.

Tanglefoot Curve, Windy Point and Toltec Gorge

Names such as Tanglefoot Curve and Windy Point are more than romantic labels. They are examples of how nineteenth-century engineers gained height with limited technology and tight budgets.

At Windy Point the track clings to a ledge cut into the mountainside, more than 600 feet above the valley floor. Across the gorge you can often see the line you have just travelled, looping back on itself in a series of curves that reveal the geography of the climb.

Further along, the train crosses high trestles above Toltec Gorge, one of the most dramatic sections of the route. These structures were built to serve a working railroad, not a tourist attraction, and their survival is part of what makes this line so significant.

Cumbres Pass: 10,015 Feet

Cumbres Pass, at 10,015 feet above sea level, is the highest point reached by a steam locomotive in regular operation in North America. Historically, this summit was notorious for heavy snowfall. Rotary snow ploughs were regularly deployed to keep the route open during winter months when the line carried freight, timber and livestock.

Today the water tank and surviving railroad structures at the summit hint at its former role as a fully functioning mountain outpost. It was never a scenic platform. It was an operational necessity.

When the train pauses here, it feels less like a photo opportunity and more like a moment to appreciate the scale of what was built and what has endured.

Osier and the Midway Pause

At roughly the halfway point lies Osier, once a simple division point and now the traditional lunch stop. Historically, crews would change here before tackling the next section of mountain territory. Today it provides a break in the journey, but it also reinforces that this was a working railroad with timetables, freight schedules and operational routines.

The full journey between Antonito and Chama takes most of the day. That length is part of its character. You are not sampling mountain steam; you are immersed in it.
