Depart UK. Check-in for your overnight flight to Delhi….
Tuesday 3 March
….Arrive in Delhi early morning and after clearing immigrations we’ll connect to the internal flight (1135/1345 hrs) to Dibrugarh, Assam. We’ll have a short road transfer to Tinsukhia town where we’ll check-in to our hotel for three nights. (B, D).
Wednesday 4 March
After breakfast, we’ll visit the Tinsukia Railway Museum and Heritage Park. Nestled beside New Tinsukia Junction and bordered by National Highway 37, the Railway Heritage Park is a captivating open-air museum showcasing one of the last metre-gauge steam engine of Tinsukia Division, Hercules – a rare Garratt steam locomotive from WWII era, B-781, a DHR steam engine from 1899, displayed atop 1898 ABR bridge pillars, 1892 built UK built turntable and much more.
Further we’ll board the late morning Guwahati Ledo Express train to Ledo, the easternmost terminus of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). At Tinsukia, the day begins with chai calls, and clanking steel. The train glides into lush Assam greenery—tea gardens and bamboo groves in view. Past Margherita, remnants of coal sidings and narrow-gauge lines whisper old stories. The landscape is slow, nostalgic, and soaked in quiet history. As Ledo nears, the realization dawns—this is the edge of India’s railway world.
The final tracks fade into the forest, reaching toward the legendary Stilwell Road.
We’ll deboard this service at Ledo terminus where we’ll use our vans to travel 8 kms further up to Lekhapani, which only has historical reminiscence of the last station before Indo-Burma (Myanmar) border. It holds deep historical and strategic importance, especially in the context of India’s northeastern frontier and World War II.

In the afternoon, visit the Coal Heritage Park & Museum at Margherita is a captivating tribute to India’s coal mining legacy. Often called the “Coal Queen of Assam,” Margherita played a pivotal role in the region’s industrial history, and this museum preserves that story with pride. Features vintage locomotives like John, Shelly, and Hassang built by W.G. Bagnall, England.
If permissions align, witness the David loco in steam and maybe in action. We are liasoning with the authorities concerned and expect some positive response on the same.

Thursday 5 March
This morning we attempt to chase the early passenger train back into Ledo for some great rail photography.
Also, we’ll visit the carriage and wagon shed in Tinsukia. Overnight in Tinsukia. (B, D).
Friday 6 March
After breakfast, we’ll board the morning service train (around 1000 hrs) southwards for a 3.5-hour scenic journey to Furkating Junction. It is vital node in the Northeast Frontier Railway network serving as a gateway to Upper Assam and Nagaland state. It was originally part of the Assam Bengal Railway. A historical landmark that bridges Assam’s colonial railway past with its modern connectivity.
From there, we’ll meet our vans again to continue by road for a 3 hr journey through the tea estates and mainly part of the forest area into Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll spend two nights in the resort. (B, D).
Being a huge protect forest / greenland area covering 1055 sq km area, housing over two-thirds of the world’s population of the Greater one-horned Rhinoceroses specie, making it the most critical stronghold for their survival. Also over 478 species of birds are recorded here.
Saturday 7 March
A morning elephant safari takes you deep into the national park to see the iconic one-horned rhinoceros and other wildlife. This park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1985.
Later, visit one of the famous Assam tea gardens, home to some of the world’s finest black teas. We will have a relaxed day to rejuvenate and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Sunday 8 March
Driven 3 hrs to Mariani Junction, a key railhead for this region. Here, we board an afternoon express train ride for three hour ride to Diphu. A small little scenic hill town nestled in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam. We’ll stay an overnight to break journey and fit in our following morning train departure. (B, D).
Monday 9 March
An early morning road transfer (1.5 hrs) through rural part and jungles of Assam into Lumding Junction, the start of one of India’s great scenic routes. Board the passenger service for a stunning 3-hour journey through the hill sections to New Haflong, arriving mid-afternoon. New Haflong is a picturesque town and a key railway hub nestled in the Dima Hasao district of Assam. It serves as the gateway to Haflong, Assam’s only hill station, and is surrounded by the lush Barail Mountain Range, offering stunning views and a tranquil atmosphere.

Tuesday 10 March
A relaxed day in New Haflong to enjoy the cool air and explore the town or simply soak in the surroundings. We will make use of the much needed downtime in the serene hill town having lot of cultural depth and natural beauty.
Wednesday 11 March
Today we take a ride on another picturesque routes on this section to Badarpur junction for a two-hour ride. Badarpur is a historic and strategically important railway station located in Cachar district, Assam. It serves as a vital link between the Barak Valley and the rest of India that was setup in 1898, originally under the Assam Bengal Railway to serve British tea plantation.
Enjoy the round trip with plenty of photo ops with overnight in New Haflong. (B, D).
Thursday 12 March
After a free morning, we board an afternoon express train to the bustling capital of Assam – Guwahati, arriving around 2055 hrs. Overnight in Guwahati. (B, D).
Friday 13 March
This morning we’ll visit the Northeast Frontier Railway Headquarters (NFR HQ) in Malegaon to photograph the historic B-Class steam loco on plinth. We’ll be escorted into the huge spread out complex by one of the railway officials as it’s a restricted area.
Later, we’ll visit the Diesel Loco Shed at Bamuni maidan, a rare opportunity to see active diesel engines being serviced and, with luck, meet with the section engineer for tea and samosas! We’ll also have time for train photography at Guwahati station. Overnight in Guwahati. (B, D).

After breakfast, transfer to Guwahati airport for your flight to Delhi and onward connection back to the UK….
