In March 2026, as part of our Darjeeling Tours Northeast Frontier adventure, we’ll witness something truly special: the team at Tipong has completed a thorough overhaul of ‘David’, and he’s all set to be fired up specially for our Darjeeling Tour guests on the Northeast Frontier Rail Tour. It has been many years since David was last fired up making this a very rare and special experience.

Track-laying work begins shortly, ahead of a trial run, and we can’t wait to see David steaming along the rails once again!

More than just an engine, David is a living relic of industrial history, a centenarian guardian of a bygone era, and one of the most captivating highlights of our Northeast Frontier Railway Tour, departing March 2026.

​David was built in the 1920s by W.G. Bagnall Ltd., Stafford, England, a company renowned for constructing robust industrial locomotives. This 0‑4‑0 saddle-tank engine was originally designed to haul coal through the remote Tipong Colliery — a task that it performed with quiet reliability for decades.

​The locomotive’s compact design belied its strength, and its whistle became a familiar sound amid the lush valleys, signalling the lifeblood of Assam’s coal industry. For local workers and travellers alike, David was more than machinery — he was a symbol of progress and human ingenuity, blending British engineering with the rugged beauty of India’s northeast.
