India’s Most Scenic Toy Train JourneyThere are railway journeys that get you from A to B, and then there are railway journeys that feel like stepping into another era entirely. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, climbing from the plains of Tamil Nadu into the cool hill station of Ooty, very much belongs in the second category. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage railway, this remarkable line winds through jungle, tea plantations and mist-covered mountains, offering one of the most atmospheric train journeys anywhere in India. It is also one of the highlights of our South India rail tour, where travellers experience a side of India that feels very different from the busy northern cities. A Railway Built for the MountainsThe Nilgiri Mountain Railway was completed in 1908, during the final decades of British India. Its purpose was simple: to connect the hot plains with the refreshing hill station of Udhagamandalam, better known as Ooty. Building a railway here was anything but simple. The Nilgiri Hills, often called the Blue Mountains, rise steeply from the plains, with gradients far too severe for a conventional railway. The solution was an ingenious rack-and-pinion system, still used today on the steepest sections of the route between Mettupalayam and Coonoor. Here, a toothed rail runs between the tracks, allowing the locomotive to literally grip the mountain as it climbs. It is a rare system in India and one of the reasons the railway earned its UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the Mountain Railways of India. Steam, Scenery and a Slower Pace of TravelThe journey itself feels wonderfully unhurried. The train winds its way through dense forests, deep ravines and hillside tea gardens, crossing more than 250 bridges and passing through 16 tunnels along the route. Traditional X-class steam locomotives still operate on the steep lower section, pushing the train uphill from behind. Watching the engine labour against the gradient, sending plumes of steam into the forest canopy, is a moment that railway enthusiasts and casual travellers alike rarely forget. As the train climbs higher, the scenery gradually changes. Tropical jungle gives way to rolling tea estates, eucalyptus trees and cooler mountain air. By the time the train reaches Coonoor, the atmosphere feels distinctly alpine. Ooty: The Queen of the NilgirisThe final destination, Ooty, has been a beloved hill retreat since the 19th century. British administrators escaping the heat of the plains developed it as a summer capital, and traces of that colonial heritage remain in its architecture, gardens and relaxed pace of life. Visitors will find botanical gardens, lakeside promenades and sweeping views across the Nilgiri Hills, all wrapped in a climate that is pleasantly cool compared with much of southern India. The railway journey is part of what gives Ooty its enduring charm. Arriving by train feels far more fitting than arriving by road, especially when the train itself is one of the most historic in Asia. One of India’s Great Railway ExperiencesIndia has several remarkable mountain railways, but the Nilgiri line stands apart for its engineering and scenery. Together with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka–Shimla Railway, it forms the trio recognised by UNESCO as the Mountain Railways of India. Each has its own character, but the Nilgiri route is perhaps the most dramatic in terms of engineering. The rack-and-pinion section, steep gradients and surviving steam locomotives combine to create an experience that feels both historic and surprisingly adventurous. For travellers interested in rail heritage, scenic landscapes and quieter corners of India, it is a journey that consistently ranks among the country’s most memorable.
